All Natural Flu Fighter Recipe – Updated 1/6/13

Hi Evolvers!

A few weeks ago, I posted my all natural flu fighter recipe on my blog. In that post, I used a juicer and a blender to mix the ingredients which requires more time and energy than most would like to invest. For Christmas, my husband brought me a Nutribullet and I decided to make a small dose of the flu fighter recipe in the tall cup (see bottom of post for additional pictures).

Flu Fighter VeggiesIt is very important that you soak non-organic veggies a water and vinegar (especially strawberries) for approximately 5-10 mins. This removes any pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and/or bacteria that may be on the edible skins of your fruits and veggies. I typically use 1 cup of white/clear vinegar but I would assume apple cider vinegar would work just as well. I do not measure the water to vinegar ratio however I make sure there is enough water to cover the veggies although they float. In this pic, the veggies I purchased (cucumbers, kale, celery, beets and gala apples) are soaking.

Recipe:

(makes approximately 1-2 servings)

1 stalk of Kale (you can discard the stalk if you’d like)

1 small handful of Spinach (approx 10-15 leaves)

3-5 medium slices of Cucumber (about 5-7 cm thick)

1 small stalk of Celery (cut off the white ends and the top piece)

1/2 Beet ( if you make more than one batch of this, be sure to only use 1 beet per week. Beets naturally cleanse/detoxify the blood however consuming more than one beet per week can cause a negative reaction that can vary from person to person)

1 small clove of Garlic

1-2 teaspoon(s) of Cayenne Powder

1-2 teaspoon(s) of Ginger Powder (or a small piece of ginger root)

4 slices of a Gala Apple (optional addition for sweeter taste)

1-2 teaspoon(s) of Natural Honey (optional)

4-5 tablespoons of Lemon Juice

Full the cup to the max line with of Orange Juice

NutriBullet Directions:

  1. Place leafy veggies (kale and spinach) in the bottom of the tall cup.
  2. Add all the ingredients as listed above. I added 3 tablespoons of raw sunflower seeds for protein since I was consuming this for breakfast.
  3. Add honey and or apples if desired at this point, or skip this step.
  4. Twist the extractor blade onto the tall cup and place the cup (blade side down) onto Nutribullet and blend until it reaches your desired consistency.
  5.  Enjoy! =)

Here are the pictures of the final product. As you can see, the beet’s color is very apparent in the recipe.

If you are interested in purchasing a NutriBullet, I would suggest your local Bed,Bath&Beyond. You can find a 20% off coupon pretty easily which can help save a few bucks!

I haven’t gotten around to making this recipe, pouring it into ice trays, freezing it, then transferring it to a zip lock bag, because it is super easily to do this in the NutriBullet.  I prefer the NutriBullet over a juicer because it liquifies everything, where a juicer discards the pulp from the juice. In many cases, the good stuff in fruits and veggies that we juice are housed in the skins and the pulp that is discarded. With the NutriBullet, nothing goes to waste and it actually helps your body digest things alot easier because it is in the liquid state.

All Natural Flu Fighter Recipe

Hi Evolvers!

If you follow me on Twitter, you would recall that I mentioned I would post my all natural flu fighter recipe on my blog this week. Last week, my husband mentioned that he started to feel a little under the weather and by the end of the day his symptoms had gotten much worse. I went to my nearest Shop Rite and picked up a few veggies to add to some ingredients we already had at the house.

I apologize that I do not have a picture of the finished product (I was more focused on Hubby getting better) but I will update this post the next time I make this.

Recipe:

(makes approximately 2-3 servings)

3 stalks of Kale

1 large handful of Spinach

1 Cucumber

2 stalks of Celery (cut off the white ends and the top piece)

1 Beet ( if you make more than one batch of this, be sure to only use 1 beet per week. Beets naturally cleanse/detoxify the blood however consuming more than one beet per week can cause a negative reaction that can vary from person to person)

3 cloves of Garlic

1-2 teaspoon(s) of Cayenne Powder

1- 1 1/2 cups of Lemon Juice

1 cup of Orange Juice

1-2 teaspoon(s) of Natural Honey (optional)

1 de-cored Gala Apple (optional addition for sweeter taste)

My Directions:

  1. Pour lemon & orange juice into the blender pitcher along with the desired amount of cayenne pepper.
  2. Use blender pitcher under the juicer’s spout to catch the juice from the other ingredients.
  3. Add each veggie/fruit to juicer until there is nothing left.
  4. Add honey if desired at this point, or skip this step.
  5. Place the lid on the blender and use the stir or mix setting on your blender to makes sure all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed together.
  6. Pour yourself a nice glass and drink up =)

If you are interested in purchasing a cheap Juicer, I purchased this from Walmart a few years ago. I do not have anything to compare it to, however it gets the job done and I am pleased with it. I’ve also considered making this recipe, pouring it into ice trays, freezing it, then transferring it to a zip lock bag until we are sick again. I haven’t had the opportunity to try this but I will in the future. If you beat me to the punch, let me know how it works for you!
